Outline/Final
I. Soon to be
A. Hardware
There is no shortage of computer technology surfacing these days. Some of the latest technology arriving are touch screens for home computers, increased storage capacity, and faster
processing speeds. Windows 10, for example, to be released in a couple of years has a touch screen interface which will make browsing files and searching the net much faster. In an attempt
to increase storage capacity in thumb drives researchers at Arizona State University are manipulating charged copper at the molecular scale. They are saying their memory is one-tenth the
cost and one thousand times more energy efficient as flash memory. This new memory technology is called a programmable metallization cell. It stores data by way of nanowires from copper
atoms to record binary ones and zeros. Processing speeds will be on the rise with the release of hafnium processors, which is a metal used in nuclear reactors, to replace silicone. They will
enable greater performance in gaming, multimedia, and multitasking. It may also increase L2 cache by up to fifty percent, an impressive amount.
B. Software
Software in the near future will have to evolve with the hardware available. Windows 10 will create a useable home touch screen system. Some people believe that software may go to
central software servers, but there are many questions into the efficiency of doing this.
II. The great beyond
A. Computers
The computer of the distant future may use a number of technologies not yet explored. Nanotechnology, which is controlling individual atoms and molecules to create computer chips and
other technologies thousands of times smaller than the current, seems like a certain route. Lithography is approaching its physical limits so breakthroughs and more research of the
technological applications of nanotechnology are inevitable. One of the great ideas for the future is a quantum computer. The informational units in these computers are called quantum bits.
These bits are not binary but more quarternary and can exist as a one a zero or simultaniously as a one and a zero. Quantum computers will be unimaginably fast. It is difficult to tell where
the future of computers will steer. One day, perhaps, we may have a computer in every house that will communicate with our minds.
B. Internet
The internet will undoubtedly go through various speed changes that will further revolutionize global communication. Developing ways to serve more people will be essential. Currently there
are two LAN technologies promising a ten-fold increase in network speeds ATM (Asynchronus Transfer Mode) and gigabit Ethernet. One day perhaps you will have a direct link-up in your head. The internet will continue to have to meet the ever-growing demands of constantly elevating population levels.
